Patient's Bill of Rights

Patient's Rights and Responsibilities


Hampton Regional Medical Center supports the rights and responsibilities of each patient. We take pride in both the quality of medical care provided, as well as our commitment to each patient, their families, and their caregivers. Below is our policy on Patient's Rights and Responsibilities that enables us to provide more effective patient care, as well as greater satisfaction for our patients and their families. Please read our policy on Patient Rights and Responsibilities so you are familiar with them. If you have any questions, please ask.

The Patient's Rights


The patient has the right to have a family member, representative or physician of his/her choice notified promptly of admission to the hospital.

The patient has the right to considerate and respectful care...free from all forms of abuse or harassment.

The patient has the right to receive care in a safe setting.

The patient has the right to privacy and confidentiality, both personal and clinical.

The patient has the right to access information in his/her clinical record within a reasonable time frame. For more on Medical Records Click Here

The patient has the right to know the identity of health care providers involved in their care.

The patient has the right to give consent for treatment.

The patient has the right to refuse treatment.

The patient has the right to consultation by health care providers at their request and expense.

The patient has the right to an advance directive and have staff and practitioners comply with these directives. For more on Advance Directives Click Here

The patient has the right to continuity of care and transfer to another facility.

The patient has the right to an explanation of hospital charges.

The patient has the right to information about rights and hospital rules and regulations.

The patient has the right to file a grievance. Patient should contact Administration at (803) 943-2771.

The patient has the right to freedom from restraints used in the provision of acute, medical, and surgical care unless clinically necessary.

You have the right to lodge a grievance with the State agency directly, regardless of whether you first use our grievance process. You may call the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control at 1-800-922-6735, or write them at 2600 Bull Street, Columbia, South Carolina 29201.

The Patient's Responsibilities


The patient is responsible for providing information about past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications and other health related matters.

The patient is encouraged to take responsibility for requesting additional information or explanation of health condition or treatment.

The patient is responsible for providing hospital with a copy of advance directive.

The patient is responsible for following the recommended treatment plan.

The patient is responsible for assuring that any financial obligations are fulfilled.

The patient is responsible for following hospital rules and regulations.

The patient is responsible for showing respect and consideration to other patients and staff.

The patient is responsible for their personal belongings and for taking them when discharged. Do not bring unnecessary items or valuables to the hospital.
